Ricardo Marrero - composer, arranger, andMusician. A graduate of New York's prestigious Music and Art High School.Richie plays all percussion instruments,as well as piano, and vibes. When he breaks outthe vibraphone, his sound is reminicent of the lateCal Tjader, and the late and great - Tito Puente. Ricardo has been at the forefront of the "Salsa"and "Latin-Jazz" musical scene since the mid 70's.He has arranged for The Fania All Stars, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, The 5 Stairsteps, and mostrecently - Ruben Blades. Ricardo has recorded two albums under theprestigious "Salsa" label - VAYA Records (a division of the famed FANIA label. The critically acclaimed "TIME" album, and the salsafied "JESSICA", which he recorded with former Eddie Palmieri vocalist,Ismael Quintana.Ricardo was also one of the founding membersof "Seis del Solar" (The Ruben Blades Band).Included on this CD ("VARIATIONS") is RicardoMarrero & The Group's crossover classic: "BABYLONIA." Legendary NY radio DJ Frankie Crocker gave "BABYLONIA" a shot on WBLS radio back in the 70's.. "Babylonia" received regular rotationairplay at top NYC radio station WBLS.Also included on the "VARIATIONS" CD arelegendary vocalist Angela Bofill (on "MY FRIEND"),and renown flautist Dave Valentin on "A TASTE OFLATIN." David can also be heard with his frolickingflute on the Latino funk song: "ALGO." "ALGO" wasa real crowd favorite whenever Ricardo Marrero & The Group performed the song at various colleges, and other gigs throughout the city.Smooth, velvety voiced Jimmy Sabater (formerlyof The Joe Cuba Sextet) sings, and raps a bit onthe progressive salsa track - "POR QUE YO TE AMO."(also included on the "VARIATIONS" CD.)"VARIATIONS" is a culmination of Ricardo Marrero's 30-plus years in the music business.

Larry Coryell - Dragon Gate (1989)

05.Molly's Lament
06.Back Bay Blues
07.And She Loved Him
08.Bottleneck Blackout
09.Things Ain't What They Used To Be
10.Snow Prince.

This is a strong jazz-oriented date that features Larry Coryell exclusively on acoustic guitar, playing two standard blues unaccompanied, using one or two overdubs on six other tracks and performing a pair of duets with fellow guitarist Stefan Grossman. The music covers a bit of ground from a superior version of "Giant Steps" and tributes to Wes Montgomery and Duke Ellington to some introspective originals, one of which hints at Bob Dylan. The original LP issue also includes a 16-page pamphlet with transcriptions (for guitar) of each of the melodies except "Giant Steps." Recommended, especially to guitarists and those who primarily associate Larry Coryell with fusion. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.

10.Blues For Cos - (with Hilton Ruiz).

Showcasing the talents of premier Latin jazz pianists Eddie Palmieri and Hilton Ruiz, this sampler/compilation contains five tracks apiece from Palmieri's Arete and Ruiz's Hands on Percussion. Palmieri's quintet of tunes starts with the hot and spicy "Don't Stop the Train," which is followed by Ruiz's classic "Mambo for Vibes" (written by and featuring Tito Puente). Palmieri's Afro-Cuban swinger "Definitely In" leads into Ruiz's ballad "Round About Midnight" (also featuring Puente). Two hip numbers follow -- Palmieri's "Crew" and Ruiz's take on Duke Ellington's "Cotton Tail." Then come Palmieri's slow mambo "Oblique" and Ruiz's simmering "Salute to Eddie." Palmieri's final entry, "Sixes in Motion," features a lengthy percussion intro by conga player Richie Flores and mad bongo man Paoli Mejias. Ruiz ends the CD with "Blues for Cos," a neat cha-cha featuring the otherworldly flute work of Dave Valentin. If you already own Arete and Hands on Percussion, there's not much need for this. However, the music here is programmed so well that it makes for a fascinating introduction to these two masterful players and their contrasting styles. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide.
