Steve Berrios (24 February 1945) is a jazz drummer and percussionist born in New York, New York. He began playing the trumpet, but not known by the instrument. It is often done in the middle of Afro-Cuban jazz, having done courses with Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers, Joe Panama and Mongo Santamaria. He has also worked with artists from other streams through jazz, like Kenny Kirkland and Art Blakey, among many others.
Second percussionist Steve Berrios Afro-Cuban/jazz output as a leader finds him exploring a variety of sources and modes of an intriguing parts, rhythmic duet (with soprano sax) on "Bemsha Swing Monk," the Latin swing and hot brass voicings of "Tribute to a Troubadour." From the opening notes of the conference, and even allowing some mixing of sound is amazing how wonderfully full and complex music that occurs in these small groups. Too often, "Latin jazz" is not particularly well or gender. Berrios, shows that in the right hands, start with the best of both worlds, and takes flight. ~ Janet Rosen, All Music Guide.
