Frank Gambale was still a vital part of Chick Corea's Elektric Band when he recorded The Great Explorers, a hard-hitting, aggressive effort that generally has more in common with the instrumental rock of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani than the more complex jazz-fusion he embraced with Corea and Steve Smith's Vital Information. JVC asked retailers to place Explorers in both their jazz and rock sections, but in fact, the CD's jazz content isn't very sizeable (exceptions include the Pat Metheny-influenced "Cruising Altitude" and the poetic "Dawn over the Nullarbor"). Be that as it may, Explorers is a solid effort -- nothing remarkable, but enjoyable and honest. Vai and Satriani fans would do well to pay close attention to Explorers, while those who are only interested in hearing the guitarist play jazz-fusion will probably want to pass. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide.

Ever since bursting onto the scene in the late '80s with Chick Corea, guitarist Frank Gambale has been a frustration for fans and critics. Finding an appropriate musical setting for his unique jazz/metal approach has proved difficult over the course of his career. He has tried his hand at contemporary jazz, hard rock, pop/rock, and fusion, all to varying degrees of success, but Coming to Your Senses proves to be the perfect forum for his hybrid style. Here Gambale sounds like the mature, seasoned guitarist that he is, still with chops to spare, but with an improved harmonic sophistication coupled with Larry Carlton-type taste and restraint. The compositions are more interesting than on his previous efforts and are no longer simply vehicles for his extemporaneous solos or contrite pop. He is joined here by keyboardist Hans Zermhuelen, heralded bassist Ricc Fierabracci, and four different drummers. This is familiar territory, but a first for Gambale in that he has finally combined all of his talents into a cohesive whole. ~ Robert Taylor.

Frank Gambale originario de Australia, nacido en 1959, es un guitarrista veloz influenciado en un principio por guitarristas como Jimi Hendrix y Eric Clapton.
Durante su progreso como músico, fue tomando el jazz como género principal con Chick Corea y Steely Dan.
En 1982 se trasladó a EE. UU., para estudiar en el Hollywood’s Guitar Institute of Technology, para graduarse con título de estudiante del año.
Trabajó para la escuela como profesor durante 4 años, en los cuales editó su primero libro: Speed Piking. En 1986 consiguió un contrato para tres discos y una gira con Jean-Luc Ponty, por medio del cual pudo conocer a Chick Corea. Con este último grabó 5 discos, de los cuales uno ganó un Grammy y otros dos fueron nominados al premio.
En 1990, Gambale alcanzó su máxima cumbre de fama, siendo reconocido como músico de jazz por todo Japón en gran parte por el disco Thunder From Down Under, además de sus tres álbumes anteriores.
Desde 1992, Frank Gambale realiza giras por el mundo con su compañía y dando seminarios y masterclasses de guitarra.
En 1996 estuvo a la cabeza del departamento de guitarra de la Los Angeles Music Academy y escribió casi todo el programa de estudio del instrumento para la escuela. En esa academia imparte clases ocasionalmente cuando se encuentra en la ciudad.
Recientemente, Gambale creó su propia discográfica, Wombat Records.
