Tenor-saxophonist Joe Farrell recorded two albums' worth of material for RealTime in March 1982. This CD reissue by Drive Archive has most of the best material including three selections featuring altoist Art Pepper in one of his final recordings; Pepper is best on his showcase "Darn That Dream." Farrell (who is joined by pianist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas and drummer John Dentz) is in consistently fine form throughout the other selections, sounding particularly adventurous on "Mode for Joe" and coming up with some fresh statements on such standards as "Blue & Boogie," "You Stepped out of a Dream" and "Someday My Prince Will Come." ~ Scott Yanow.

After his association with CTI ended, Joe Farrell made two weak and rather commercial sets for Warner Bros., of which this LP is the second. Although Farrell gets in a few good spots on tenor, soprano and flute, the strictly for-the-money arrangements of Trevor Lawrence and the excess of musicians sinks this effort. The version of Stevie Wonder's "Another Star" is dominated by dull "background" vocalists; most songs have instantly dated funk played by the rhythm section, and the talents of keyboardists Herbie Hancock and Victor Feldman are wasted. Only a three-and-a-half-minute unaccompanied tenor solo on "Come Rain or Come Shine" by Farrell still sounds good 20 years later. ~ Scott Yanow.

In the 1980s, a recording came out titled Ballads by Four, which had a ballad feature apiece for tenors Johnny Griffin ("Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"), Joe Henderson ("Good Morning Heartache"), John Klemmer ("God Bless the Child") and altoist Art Pepper ("Over the Rainbow"). All were recorded during a four-day period with fine support from pianist Stanley Cowell, either Cecil McBee or John Heard on bass, and drummer Roy Haynes. For the CD reissue, not only are second versions of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Over the Rainbow" from Griffin and Pepper included, but also tenorman Joe Farrell's exploration of "Body and Soul," which did not make it onto the original album. Despite the consistent slow tempo, there is a fair amount of variety on this collection, with Klemmer's passionate "God Bless the Child" and Pepper's two "Over the Rainbow"'s taking honors. ~ Scott Yanow.

One should ignore the frivolous cover photos (which show a bikini-clad "Miss Holland" posing with a bass and flexing her muscles) in evaluating this music. Actually, the performances are quite good on what would be Joe Farrell's next-to-last album as a leader. Accompanied by drummer Louis Hayes and a pair of fine Dutch musicians (pianist Rob Van Den Broeck and bassist Harry Emmery), Farrell (who alternates between tenor, soprano and flute) is in surprisingly strong form this late in his life. He stretches out on John Coltrane's "Miles' Mode," two standards (including an abstract version of "Three Little Words") and a pair of his originals. The music ranges from hard bop to post-bop, and throughout, Joe Farrell takes consistently inventive solos. Worth searching for.by Scott Yanow.

This is an excellent straight-ahead outing matching Joe Farrell (who takes four songs on tenor and one apiece on soprano and flute) with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, keyboardist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas, and drummer Peter Erskine. Originally cut for the Contemporary label, the set has six group originals (by Farrell, Hubbard, and Cables) that are performed at the perfect length, mostly between six and eight and a half minutes (other than the 12-minute "Malibu"). The concise solos make expert use of every note, and the results are both fresh and swinging.
