Pianist Jorge (HorHay) Dalto's style was a blend of his experience with the music of his native country, Argentina, and the jazz of America. He had been playing since he was five and began his professional career at the age of fifteen. Jorge s mellow style had been part of George Benson's band since 1975. He appears on Benson's three platinum albums, BREEZIN, IN FLIGHT and WEEKEND IN L.A., and the Grammy-winning MASQUERADE single. After numerous sessions with other key artists, Jorge worked to establish himself as a key artist on Versatile Records.
Born July 8,1948 in Rogue Perez, 100 miles north of Buenos Aires, Jorge was encouraged into music by his father, Eliseo, a noted bandleader. Tuning in the radio at every opportunity to such artists as Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. Other early influences included Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and Bud Powell. After a brief career as a professional musician in Argentina and a year in the Army, Jorge moved to Chicago. He joined a latin quintet, listened, played and learned.Two years later he moved to New York, where all the action was, and played with the latin bands of Machito and Tfto Puente. He performed on the albums YESTERDAYS with Gato Barbieri and AFRO CUBAN MOODS with Machito and Dizzy Gillespie. In 1977, Jorge recorded his own album CHEVERE which translates loosely into beautiful, nice, groovy. Other recordings include appearances on the Grant Green Eas-/ and Joyce Leftenant IT'S TOO LATE! as well as albums by Harvey Mason and Phil Upchurch. In 1987 Jorge died of cancer at the age of 39. He passed away in his sleep after a long bout with the disease, which had kept him away from the music scene for more than a year.
