ALWAYS PACK YOUR UNIFORM ON TOP was recorded during a weeklong engagement at landmark London jazz club Ronnie Scott's. Bassist/composer Steve Swallow finds tight and sympathetic company in trumpet player Barry Ries, tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, guitarist Mick Goodrick, and drummer Adam Nussbaum. Goodrick's guitar dances nicely between the rhythm section and the dual horns.
ReplyDeleteSince Swallow's writing employs subtle and quiet gradations, the recording strives for warmth and clarity. The long, resonant tones of Swallow's bass guitar (the instrument to which he switched exclusively after first making a name for himself as a string bassist in the late '50s and early '60s) are presented with particular vitality. ALWAYS is the first recording for this ensemble, and the live setting captures the quintet's interplay perfectly.
