  1. CTI Records: Birth of Groove is a budget-priced, 10-track sampler that was designed to promote Sony's 1997 reissue of the CTI catalog. During the '70s, CTI was one of the leading fusion and jazz-rock labels, boasting a roster full of big names like Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, Milt Jackson, Esther Philips and Deodato. All of those musicians, plus several others, are showcased on Birth of Groove, which offers an excellent portrait of the smooth, laidback, vaguely funky jazz that was the label's trademark. For the curious, it's a neat way to become acquainted with the label. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine.
